Central Asia: the Amu Darya, Syr Darya , Mountainous Turkmenistan, Pamir-Alai, Tien Shan (west). On dry stony slopes, abandoned arable lands in the desert steppe and dry river beds in the foothills and lower mountaine zone.

Triterpene saponins: gypsoside. Roots. Carbohydrates 20%.Triterpene saponins 18-29%: akantofillosid A , akantofillosids B, C and D. The maximum saponin content – in the fruiting phase, minimum – at the beginning of the growing season. Number of saponins increases with age of the plant. Antraglycosids. The underground part of the stems. Saponins 6.1 – 10.4%. The above-ground part. 0.79% saponin.Flavonoids. Tannins 0.07%. Antraglycosids. The stems, leaves, buds, flowers, fruits and seeds. Saponins.

Traditional Use and Activity

Roots. Broth – expectorant, wound healing. In veterinary medicine as a saponin-vaccine is used for brucellosis of sheeps. In the industry – as a foaming agent in the production of electrolytic zinc and porous concrete. For the preparation of the Tajik national dish “nushallo.”
